Why Kittiwake?

Kittiwakes are gentle-looking, medium sized gulls with a small yellow bill and a dark eye. They have a grey back with white underneath. Their legs are long and black. In flight, the black wing-tips show no white, unlike other gulls, and look as if they have been "tipped in ink" (RSBP)

Kittiwakes are Red Listed, the highest conservation concern birds can have in the UK. The Kittiwake population in the UK has declined by 43% over the last 25 years. Climate change has reduced the availability of sandeels, a key food source for kittiwakes. Kittwates are an "indicator species", if the Kittiwakes are doing well, then the Puffins and other seabirds should be producing good numbers of chicks too. These populations of seabirds are at the forefront of the climate emergency, and they are in significant decline. https://www.rspb.org.uk/media-centre/volunteers-monitor-yorkshire-kittiwakes
